ASP FAQs
What are the hours for ASP?
- ASP hours and schedule follow the Highlands Elementary School schedule and calendar.
- Typical program hours are from school dismissal until 6:00pm.
- During all school breaks (professional development days, holidays, etc.), we offer full-day care from 8:30am-5:30pm.
Do residents have enrollment priority?
- The Highlands Resident enrollment period occurs first. Once this period closes, we open enrollment to non-Highlands Residents.
- Please note, non-Residents are charged ~10% higher fees.
Do you offer camps during school breaks?
- During school breaks, we do offer full day camps for Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer Breaks.
- Registration for school break camps is not included in ASP tuition, and must be registered for separately.
How does the first day of school work?
- KINDERS: On the first day of school, your child's kindergarten teacher will walk them outside upon school dismissal and physically hand off your student to ASP Staff at the kindergarten playground. Once all kinder students are accounted for and signed in, we begin to eat lunch.
- All teachers and ASP staff have a list of students attending the program. Staff ensure that all students are accounted for and signed in before leaving the pick-up area.
- After the first day, and going forward, ASP staff will wait by the Kindergarten classrooms for dismissal.
- All ASP staff will be wearing black shirts with "ASP STAFF" on the back.
Where does Kindergarten eat lunch?
- ASP Kindergarteners eat lunch at the Highlands Elementary School.
- You may pack your student a bagged lunch or order hot lunch through the school. We will assist students to pick up their hot lunch.
- Once students are finished, we will walk the students back to the Rec (about a 10 minute walk).
What is a typical day like at ASP?
- Kindergarteners are dismissed from school at 12:20pm and will eat lunch with ASP staff at Highlands Elementary School. Staff then walk students to the Rec, which takes about 10 minutes.
- We arrive at the Rec around 1:20pm. Kindergarteners have 2 hours of age-appropriate activities before the 1st-4th graders arrive.
- At 3:00pm, students sit down together and the head teacher explains the different play options for the afternoon and lets students know what the afternoon snack will be.
- From 3:30pm-4:30pm, students are playing in their chosen areas.
- From 4:30pm-5:30pm, new areas and activities are opened for students.
- Please feel free to pcik up your child(ren) at any time, but all children combine at 5:30pm for easier pick-up.
What is Rec Swim?
- Rec Swim is a program we provide in our program for no additional cost.
- Rec Swim is offered on Wednesdays through September.
- Rec Swim is paused October-March due to weather. Swim typically resumes in April.
- Days and times are determined by Aquatic Staff.
- Children can play in the 3-foot section of the pool, so all swim abilities are welcome.
- Our staff will assist with changing in and out of swim clothes, but it is best for your child to be able to do this independently for maximum swim time.
- Our staff, along with certified lifeguards, are on duty during Rec Swim.
- This is available to any K-4th graders on site with ASP.
What if my child is sick or cannot attend ASP?
- If your child will be absent on one of their regularly scheduled ASP days, please contact the Highlands Recreation District no later than 12:00pm that day.
- This will avoid any confusion at school pick-up as we do not leave the school unless every child in the program is accounted for.
What is the sign-in/sign-out process?
- The sign-in/sign-out clipboards are located above the parent mailboxes in our main classroom, "The Social Room".
- ASP Staff will sign your child in daily upon pick-up from school.
- It is the parent's responsibility to sign-out their child upon pick-up from the program daily.
- We are a licensed childcare program so full signatures are required (initials will not be accepted).
What is the School Break/Professional Development Day schedule?
- Our typical ASP program is closed for all school breaks (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer)
- During school breaks, we offer full-day camp for a separate fee.
- All camps run from 8:30am-5:30pm and include offsite field trips.
- ASP is open all day for most Highlands Elementary PD days. These days are provided at no extra cost if it is your child's normally scheduled ASP day. If not, drop-ins are avaialble based on availability.
- Please see our current Activity Guide for PD dates, school breaks, and holiday closures.
What are your staff to student ratios?
- Our After School Program is licensed through the State of California Department of Social Services. Per licensing, we are required to keep child/staff ratios of 14:1 in all play areas.
- All ASP staff are over the age of 18 and have received fingerprint clearance prior to employment.
